New Scoring System by Cambridge English for KET, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE

New Scoring System by Cambridge English for KET, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE

For those of you who aren’t aware of the changes recently made by Cambridge English Language Assessment, Cambridge has changed their grading scale as well as their FCE and CAE exams for 2015.

One critique about the old exam was its letter grades and «pass/fail» quality.

Employers and students now want to know where they rank amongst fellow employees and other job candidates. A higher score allows students to stand out from the crowd.

The score also allows for comparison with other exams, which gives students more options in terms of Cambridge Exams’ use.

The changes give you a number on a scale that goes from 80 to 230.

The New Scores will look like this:
• 122 to 190 for Cambridge English: First
• 142 to 210 for Cambridge English: Advanced
• 162 to 230 for Cambridge English: Proficiency

What is a passing mark in each exam?

  • First Certificate: 160
  • Advanced Certificate: 180
  • Proficiency Certificate: 200

Anything below these marks will be deemed at a lower level than the test demands. Anything higher than:

180 for the First Certificate, 200 for the Advanced Certificate and 220 for the Proficiency Certificate mean that the student passed the exam with

  • A C1 level in the First Certificate
  • A C2 level in the Advanced Certificate
  • A HIGH C2 level in the Proficiency Certificate

While these recognitions have existed for some time now, the new numerical system shows you how close you are to acheiving those goals better than ever.
